Carnival is celebrated throughout Europe from unknown times. It is not known with certainty its origin, some think that it comes from the Celtic tradition, others say the beginnings of this celebration, they can be found in adoration of Baco or Dionisos.
With the advent of Christianity, many of the pagan festivities, which were formerly celebrated, were taken and christened. In this way, this celebration that possibly had its meaning in the farewell of the long and hard days of the winter, was mixed with the farewell of the meat before the period of abstinence of Lent that begins on the Wednesday Wednesday of Cinza (that is to say "forty days before Sunday of Branches).
In Galicia, Entroido is always celebrated. There are manifestations of a very deep tradition that still survive today, especially in the province of Ourense, and in some parts of Lugo, mixing these ancestral traditions with newer elements.
I enter the so-called "group rituals" (its origin and meaning is unknown) we can cite:
The Cigarrons that are masked and adorned characters (like in Verín), the Pantallas that soften the viandantes with two air filled bladders (very common in the Carnival of Xinzo da Limia), the different Peliqueiros (like in Laza), characters that are distinguished by its animalization: they do not speak, they take crazy like the animals, they hurt people and they raise the skirt to the women,. animals such as a cow, the donkey or the rooster, real or simulated symbolize the Carnival itself and take part in party, either to be mocked or scorned, either to act actively by becoming falcatruadas; The Correos, who go by the neighborhood, offer the Xenerais "sing" to each of the houses in exchange for a donation, the Xenerais, dressed in disguise with hats, medals and ribbons that shock the uniforms of the nineteenth century.
In some of the parishes there are also encounters or "jumps" between the generals, doing a satirical review of everyday life.
The costumes in rural areas have always been very varied, their symbolism is the one around the world of the reverse ... That's why there are men dressed in women and women dressed in men, priests or nuns ... Many times those who did not have disguise, dressed in clothes on the reverse side.
No Carnival everything is allowed. Speeches are very common, such as wills, so-called "starts" or "coplas", which are satires of reality and events that happened during the year, including referrals to neighbors and public institutions.
Since the nineteenth century, a more bourgeois carnival, with more elaborate costumes and dances, began to be celebrated in the town and city liceos. Already in the 20th century, and during the war and post-war era, the carnival was persecuted, so some of the traditions were lost. But, since the 70's, a process of recovery of these ancestral traditions has begun, both in villages and cities; In these last ones with parades, contests and costumes on the streets accompanied by music.
But what always prevailed in Carnival, and the spirit of criticism against everything, and the possibility of saying those things with a tone of satire.
