Amber
.
The amber, also called 'yellow amber', is a yellow, transparent, translucent or opaque semiprecious stone with translucent or opaque inclusions of organic origin, namely fossil resin. Amber is not a true amber.
Some inclusions can give them bluish or greenish color, such as the amber in the Dominican Republic. These stones are rare and very expensive specimens. The amber age is estimated at up to 260 million years. It comes from the resin of the trees of those times, which in time has solidified as an amorphous substance, without being a mineral. The amber presents great importance for paleontologists, through the inclusion of perfectly preserved fossils for millions of years in the mass of the resin.
The Cave of El Soplao El Soplao cave in Cantabria, Spain, contains the largest amber mine in Europe, dating back 110 million years. [1] The chimney is considered precious stone since prehistoric times, being used as a jewel or object worship. Some antique Egyptian jewelry, which have been preserved, are more than 6,000 years old.
One of the most valuable works of art in history with this precious stone is the 'Amber Salon', whose amber decorations were given in 1716 by the King of Prussia, Frederick Wilhelm I (1688-1740), the Russian Tsar Peter the Great . This art object, exhibited in Russia, disappeared (stolen) during the Second World War. Between 1979 and 2003, the salon was rebuilt after photographs by Russian specialists, and is now exhibited in the Catherine Palace in the town of Pushkin (formerly the village of Ţarskoe Selo), about 25 km south of St. Petersburg. Original amber decorations have not yet been found (2011).
If a piece of amber is rubbed with a piece of fur, it causes an electric charge on its surface, which can then create a spark when it is brought near a ground-bound object.
