Hace unas semanas estaba en medio de una charla con mi equipo. Les intentaba explicar que hacemos las cosas pensando, que hay que dejar atrás el "pero es que siempre lo hemos hecho así". Y en ese momento vino a mi mente el experimento de los monos y el continuismo social. El experimento consistía en lo siguiente:

Un grupo de cinco monos es introducido en una jaula con una escalera en el centro. En lo alto de la escalera se ofrecen plátanos. Cuando un mono sube la escalera el resto es regado con agua fría. Al cabo de un tiempo cuando un mono intenta subir la escalera el resto le azota para evitar que lo haga, porque ellos saben que les regarán con agua si lo hace. Tras unos cuantos intentos ya ningún mono intenta subir la escalera porque sabe que sus compañeros le van a atizar. En ese momento uno de los monos es sustituido por un nuevo mono, ajeno a que ha pasado en la jaula. El primer instinto del mono es subir la escalera a por un plátano pero cuando lo hace los otros cuatro le azotan hasta que desiste. Tras intentarlo unas cuantas veces el mono nuevo tampoco sube la escalera por miedo a que los otros le peguen. Se sustituye otro mono y también es azotado al intentar subir la escalera, y así hasta que todos los monos son sustituidos y ninguno pertenece al grupo original. Al final del experimento vemos que que ningún mono sube la escalera a por un plátano y ninguno sabe en realidad por qué, simplemente saben que si uno sube la escalera el resto le va a pegar.

Y ahora nos encontramos con lo que se está llamando "desafío catalán". Básicamente la pesadilla de cualquier colonizador, cuando el pueblo al que intentan someter dice basta y ofrece una resistencia tal que no pueden contener. Y uno inevitablemente se pregunta "¿de dónde vienen tanto odio y ganas de someter a un pueblo que supuestamente es tan similar al español?". Simplemente hay que mirar el experimento de los monos. En España durante generaciones se ha enseñado a odiar a los catalanes, y ese en efecto es un odio sin fundamento. Simplemente ha sido así durante siglos.

Son como los monos dentro de la jaula, no defenderán a los catalanes en un ejercicio de simple justicia porque saben que algún otro mono les va a azotar por hacerlo. Socialmente se produce el silencio de los justos, una barra libre al anticatalanismo.

** Once you finish reading, check the pictures of fake sites attached and post in the comments why are the pages fake.

I can detect fraudulent emails just by looking at them, I have developed a 6th sense for it. But sometimes I have to admit some email do seem legit and I have to investigate further. But don't worry, here's a short guide on how to check them and it will work in 99.9% of the cases.

The typical case, you receive an email from a well know company saying you need to take action, or they're billing you for something you didn't purchase, etc. The email is not detected by the SPAM filters and lands in your inbox. Let's go!

1. Check the email address

The email address can be concealed. A full email address contains the name to display and the actual address to sent to. For example "Amazon Customer Care"  customercare@amazon.com . This seems to be legit, the actual email address does point to the real amazon domain.

But let's take this one now "Amazon Customer Care" . Careful, this email is not being sent from the amazon domain owner. This email is being sent from mailer.com. The domain is alway the closest to the extension. Examples:

amazon.com -> this is amazon.com
cdn.amazon.com -> this is amazon.com
mail.amazon.com -> this is amazon.com

amazon.super.com -> this is super.com
amazonmail.yipee.com -> this is yipee.com
amazon.legit.com -> this is legit.com

Clear? Never trust emails that do not come from the real domain.

2. The links inside

I have come across really elaborate emails, they do look exactly like the real thing for example Apple saying you are being charged £49 for app purchases. I am not even sure that Apple sends these emails so another tip, check where to the links take you. This is very easy. When you "hover" a link (you put the mouse on top of it, at the bottom left or right of the browser you will see where the link is going to take you. We said this example was for apple, so the link should take you to Apple if there is any action. But again, the real address can be concealed.

(those spaces there are on purpose so the link doesn't get converted to a real link when I publish this article)

What will happen if you click that link is that you will land in a page that it's not apple and they will know that you had interest in that email. So automatically they will know that you probably have an Apple account, that your email is valid so they can send you more attempts of phishing, etc. There's a lot of info that can be stolen with a single visit:

- your email
- you location
- your computer address (IP)
- your language
- your operating system
- your phone number and carrier (if you click from your mobile)
- etc.

3. COMMON SENSE! If you don't have an Apple account and you receive emails from there, why even bother? If you are not expecting a parcel, why would you get an email from FedEx? If you don't have a contract with X phone company, why would they charge you?

Emails are free, easy to create and easy to manipulate. If they want to steal your money they will charge directly your bank account, why would they warn you?

And the last bit of common sense: NEVER give your personal details or bank details to anybody that asks them through an email unless you are specifically expecting that. Example:

"ze2000 we are giving away 10 Samsung Galaxy for (insert your carrier here) customer. Just fill out this form to enter the raffle".

Oh great! A free phone! How convenient for doing nothing when I am already a customer!

Use your common sense!

After fighting an awkward operator I will finally have the laptop repaired. Transcription attached. To say that this product is a top of the range, this shouldn't be happening. Note that it took 1 hour to complete the claim, ridiculous. Next time I'm buying an Apple.

I have to say that I love the history of Apple and I know a lot about it. So I am going to write a series of articles trying to go into details that some people might not know. I'm not going to go into unnecesary technical details because it's more about the history but if anyone wan't more details just ask in the comments.

Apple was founded by 3 people. Yep that's right, apart from Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak there was a third person, Ronald Wayne. Wayne had a 10% of the shares and he actually sold them just 12 days after Apple beind incorporated 2nd April 1976. He sold his shares for $800 and he has always said since that he does not regret it. Hard to believe!

Before leaving Wayne did some work for Apple. He designed the first logo before the famous bitten Apple (see in the pictures) and he wrote the manual for the Apple I (Apple Computer back then).

But let's focus on the machine. Steve Wozniak attended a Homebrew Conputer Club in 1975 and he found the motivation to build his own machine. He has it ready in less than a year. It was Steve Jobs's idea to sell it as Wozniak only did it for fun.

They had an amazing machine compared to the other computers of the time. A computer back then was just a box with a few lights that people would program to make sequences or beeps. Yes, that was considered real nerd stuff. Wozniak's computer could use a keyboard an a tv to display images.

To start the company Steve Jobs sold his VW van and Steve Wozniak sold his HP-65 calculator.

Steve Jobs managed to sell a few machines to the ByteShop. The machines were priced at $666.66, Wozniak liked to repeat numbers. The real number of sold units is unclear but it seems to be around 200. The boards were manufactured in the garage of Jobs's parents house. They had help from friends and they were unsure they would be able to pay them for their work.

The Apple I was sold as a board: no box, no keyboard, no screen,... just the board. The users had to build the rest and there were some very original builds by enthusiasts like in shoeboxes, suitcases, handmade wood cases, etc. It was discontinued in 1977 as the new Apple II was out with better features.

As of today there are 63 Apple I's accounted for. It is a rare and expensive collectors item.

The Apple I paved the way to create the Apple that we know today. After their initial success they attracted the attention of angel investor Mike Markula and everything took off. But this will come in Part 2.
