A previously unknown "supercolony" of Adélie penguins has been discovered in the Antarctic, easing fears their numbers had been in decline for decades due to climate change.

The thriving colony inhabits the remote Danger Islands, where the effects of both climate change and human activity are less pronounced than in other parts of Antarctica.

Located off the Antarctic Peninsula's northern tip, these islands are both incredibly remote and surrounded by thick sea ice.

This has allowed the penguins to remain hidden from the world, until a team of researchers mounted an expedition there to investigate signs of nesting birds.

"Until recently, the Danger Islands weren't known to be an important penguin habitat," said Professor Heather Lynch, an ecologist at Stony Brook University who co-led the work.

However, this changed when scientists noted guano stains on Nasa satellite imagery of the islands – a tell-tale sign of a massive penguin colony.

To investigate, Professor Lynch mounted a scientific expedition to the islands with the intention of counting the birds first hand.

As well as assessing the birds from the ground, the scientists made use of drones to take pictures of the island from above and count the hundreds of thousands of breeding pairs.

In total there were 751,527 pairs of penguins living on the islands – more than the rest of the Antarctic Peninsula combined.

Professor Michael Polito, an ecologist at the Louisiana State University who participated in the research, said he was "amazed by the sheer number of Adélie penguins" he saw.

"The water around the island boiled with penguins," he said.

For decades, scientists thought the total number of Adélie penguins had been in steady decline, but the new colony has been protected by its remote location.

"Not only do the Danger Islands hold the largest population of Adélie penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula, they also appear to have not suffered the population declines found along the western side of Antarctic Peninsula that are associated with recent climate change," said Professor Michael Polito, an ecologist at the Louisiana State University who participated in the research.

"It puts the East Antarctic Peninsula in stark contrast to the Adélie and chinstrap penguin declines that we are seeing on the West Antarctic Peninsula," said Dr Tom Hart, a penguin researcher at the University of Oxford.

"It’s not clear what the driver of those declines is yet; the candidates are climate change, fishing and direct human disturbance, but it does show the size of the problem."

This stark comparison suggests penguins fare much better when their environments are completely undisturbed, a finding that reinforces calls from environmentalists for a protects area in the Weddell Sea, where the Danger Islands are located.

The Dutch artist Bart Jansen makes his dead cat Orville fly, after having him stuffed and mounting propellers to his legs.

The 'Orvillecopter' is exhibited at Amsterdam's KunstRai, the city's annual art show.

Orville died when he was run over by a car. He will receive more powerful engines for the Hague expo later this summer

Bart Jansen is best known for turning his dead cat Orville into a drone. His next flying venture aims to see humans riding on their animals in the sky.

"I never know what the next thing is going to be but what I do know is that we've wanted to build a helicopter for ourselves," Mr Jansen said.

"One that we can fit in and we have been thinking about designing one that you can sit on and flies.

"If I'm going to fly, I want to fly in something weird. So we've been thinking about animals that are big enough to fly in.

"We have a cow at the moment - it's at the tannery right now. It's going to be like a bovine personnel carrier, but airborne."

Mr Jansen started collecting dead animals in 2007 for a book called the Observer's Book of Roadkill and began to stuff his discoveries.

He took some taxidermy lessons but admits he's not the best taxidermist in the world and still seeks the help of the professionals when he doesn't have time to do it himself.

Mr Jansen, who describes himself as an artist, has turned rats, sharks and ostriches into flying drones and even made a badger submarine.

"We never know beforehand what it's going to look like, that's the fun thing," he said.

There have been critics of his work. "I don't know who they are, the people that are complaining online. I have 10 neighbours and they all like it."

Mr Jansen has teamed up with engineer Arjen Beltman and the pair have received lots of requests to transform other people's pets into drones.

"We ask people to have their animal taxidermied before sending it to us."

The majority of the requests come from the US. He warns that the finished product probably won't exactly resemble the beloved pet.

"It's not going to look like dear old Ralph or much beloved Pebbles. Orville is not the same cat he was when he was alive. He looks very different."

Mr Jansen said he wanted to be an inventor from a young age.

"It's not about drones for me. I don't really like drones or remote-controlled flying.

"That's what Arjen does. What I wanted back then was a monument to my cat who was named after Orville Wright, one of the Wright brothers.

"In that train of thought, the monument for my deceased cat had to fly. I drew a drawing of a cat with a blade out of its back and said, 'Let's make a helicopter.'

"I was working as a builder back then and I said to one of the engineers, 'Does anyone here fly drones?' and that's when I met Arjen and now we are partners."

But the pair don't want to just churn out the same animals - they're going to be selective.

"I now have to think about how much it will cost to make a golden retriever fly - I have no idea.

"It takes weeks to get the animal in the air so it would be nice if people didn't send me frozen animals.

"I just want a skin that we can build the copter around."

It took over 12 months and three versions before Orville the cat was ready to fly.

On January 24, 1908, the Boy Scouts movement begins in England with the publication of the first installment of Robert Baden-Powell’s Scouting for Boys. The name Baden-Powell was already well known to many English boys, and thousands of them eagerly bought up the handbook. By the end of April, the serialization of Scouting for Boys was completed, and scores of impromptu Boy Scout troops had sprung up across Britain.

In 1900, Baden-Powell became a national hero in Britain for his 217-day defense of Mafeking in the South African War. Soon after, Aids to Scouting, a military field manual he had written for British soldiers in 1899, caught on with a younger audience. Boys loved the lessons on tracking and observation and organized elaborate games using the book. Hearing this, Baden-Powell decided to write a nonmilitary field manual for adolescents that would also emphasize the importance of morality and good deeds.

First, however, he decided to try out some of his ideas on an actual group of boys. On July 25, 1907, he took a diverse group of 21 adolescents to Brownsea Island in Dorsetshire where they set up camp for a fortnight. With the aid of other instructors, he taught the boys about camping, observation, deduction, woodcraft, boating, lifesaving, patriotism, and chivalry. Many of these lessons were learned through inventive games that were very popular with the boys. The first Boy Scouts meeting was a great success.

With the success of Scouting for Boys, Baden-Powell set up a central Boy Scouts office, which registered new Scouts and designed a uniform. By the end of 1908, there were 60,000 Boy Scouts, and troops began springing up in British Commonwealth countries across the globe. In September 1909, the first national Boy Scout meeting was held at the Crystal Palace in London. Ten thousand Scouts showed up, including a group of uniformed girls who called themselves the Girl Scouts. In 1910, Baden-Powell organized the Girl Guides as a separate organization.

In 1916, Baden-Powell organized the Wolf Cubs, which caught on as the Cub Scouts in the United States, for boys under the age of 11. Four years later, the first international Boy Scout Jamboree was held in London, and Baden-Powell was acclaimed Chief Scout of the world. He died in 1941.

Minar-e-Pakistan (Pakistan Day Memorial) is a minar which was built to commemorate the day when the Pakistan resolution was passed on March 23, 1940. The main tower of this memorial was completed on March 22, 1968. he location was originally known as Minto Park. It was here that the historic session of the All-India Muslim League was held on March 23, 1940.

In 1960 the Muslim League leaders impressed upon the local authorities the need for building a memorial. The governor of West Pakistan, Akhtar Hussain, issued an appeal to the public for contributions for constructing the memorial. He also constituted a memorial committee and a memorial fund for collecting donations from philanthropists. Murat Khan, a Turkish architect, designed the memorial. The governor laid the foundation stone of the memorial on March 23, 1960. The tower took about eight years to complete, at an estimated cost of Rs. 500,000.

The tower rises above a platform shaped like a five-pointed star. The terrace is three feet from ground level, the platform's height is about six feet, and the star platform is about 12 feet high. It is surrounded by two crescent-shaped pools, four feet deep and lined with green and red marble. The tower has a spring shaped hall spanned by arches. The rostrum facing Badshahi Mosque is a quadrant constructed with Mughal patterned tiles. The circular diameter of the tower is 320 feet. The petals, 30 feet high, look like a blooming flower. The total height of the structure is 203 feet from ground level. On the marble slabs of the central shaft are inscribed a brief history of the Pakistan Resolution in English, Urdu and Bengali, the 99 names of God and poetic verses from Allama Iqbal. The tower has 10 vertical covering slabs interlaced with flower petals and glazed cement domes, with a sightseeing platform and a central spiral staircase.

The design of the base and the first four platforms depict the history of the Pakistan Movement through architectural symbols. Rough stones and cement have been haphazardly laid representing the chaotic conditions and the lack of direction in the early stages of the freedom movement of the Indian Muslims. The stones used for the first platform are rough Taxila stones. Hammer-dressed stones are used on the second platform. On the third platform are laid chiseled stones, while the fourth and final platform is of highly polished marble, symbolizing the ultimate success of the freedom movement.

The dome is of stainless steel inlaid with fine glass pieces. Up to the dome there are four stages spread over 162 stairs. The best and encompassing panoramic view of Lahore and the citadel is obtained by using the elevator which takes you all the way up to the top of the tower. The park is a popular recreational spot for Lahorites who congregate there in large numbers. It is often used for holding large public meetings. The locality of the memorial has been highlighted with well planned parks. Eight marble fountains on the main access add to the beauty of the memorial, emitting watery rainbows with the help of multicolored lights.

When you speak, you set the molecules in the air around you in motion. Similar to waves in the ocean, each molecule affects the molecules around them, and these create a wave of sound that propagates forward through the air until it eventually seems to meet some kind of quiet end. Perhaps these waves are absorbed by the walls and furniture in the room. If you are outdoors, then maybe the wind can come along and disrupt the wave. The sound waves from other sources in the environment may come along and interfere with the ones you produced.It’s kind of like throwing stones in a lake. If you throw just one stone, you can clearly see the ripples as they move outwards from where the stone dropped. If you then throw in other stones though, it soon becomes much more difficult to tell which ripples were caused by that first stone. If no additional stones are added, then the ripples will reach the edge of the water and possibly be reflected off in a new direction, but with ever decreasing energy. Eventually, all sign that a stone has been dropped seems to disappear. Your voice traveling through the air is very similar to dropping a stone in the water.Of course, the whole process is much more complicated than that, but the details are not important for what I’m trying to explain. Whether it be waves in the water or waves in the air, it’s basically the same idea. There appears to be an end to the wave at some point, but this is not actually the case. The energy involved is gradually changed from one form into another until it is no longer recognizable as human speech, but it never actually disappears.There are many possibilities that occur to me when I think about the fate of a sound wave. The energy in that wave may continue to bounce around for quite a while if it passes certain thresholds, but I’ll save the topic of thresholds for another blog. The energy may get transformed into heat energy, and the temperature of the environment may rise slightly, though you would never notice it. That heat energy may cause even more and smaller effects.
