National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday in June. Personally, I haven’t met a doughnut that I didn’t like. I am sure there are many doughnut fans out there. They are spelt both ways doughnuts and donuts. So that you can be ready to celebrate donut day next year here are some amazing facts about these delicious sweet treats.

•	New England settlers from Hertfordshire in the U.K. brought with them to America a local specialty known as the “Hertfordshire Nut” which was also referred to as the “Dow-Nut”.
•	Yankees had a tradition to celebrate the one thousands barrel of whale oil by frying up doughnuts in the oil.
•	There is an association called the National Dunking Association whose members in the 1940s included such stars of that day like Zero Mostel, Johnny Carson and Martha Graham. 
•	I smile as I write this because it seems so amusing to me. When it came to Mardi Gras time in Vienna, Austria aristocrats would compete for prizes of silver pistols by shooting at flying doughnuts.
•	During wartime Salvation Army volunteers boosted the morale of young soldiers in the trenches by frying up batches of fresh doughnuts for them. 
•	Red Cross volunteers put their own lives on the line by driving trucks equipped with doughnut-making machines to the front lines. 
•	The reason why the police are associated with doughnuts is that in the 1940s and 1950s when officers worked the graveyard shift there was no place to grab a bite except at a doughnut shop. The habit just stuck.
•	The Salvation Army started National Donut Day in 1938 so they could raise money to build a home for unwed mothers. When someone contributed they received a cardboard doughnut. National Donut Day will come on June 2, 2017.
•	This was a big surprise for me. At one time it was not traditional to bob for apples on Halloween. Instead long before all that Halloween candy made its appearance people celebrated by bobbing for doughnuts hung from a string. Now you have an original idea for your Halloween party this year.

Tree-Hop on Dominica

Believe me, there is such an island simply floating in the Caribbean swinging on the waves. Dominica can be found a few miles to the north of Martinique and is referred to as Nature Island. Over half of this island is oceanic rainforest and it’s also home to eastern Caribbean’s first UNESCO World Heritage site. Tourists arriving in Dominica can explore Morne Trois Pitons National Park and Boiling Lake which is the world’s second-largest hot spring. For sports enthusiasts or anyone who wants to be active hiking at all levels is available at Waitukubuli Trail. The whole route consists of 14 segments which cover 115 miles and bisect the length of the island. Along the way, you can view seven waterfalls and take the challenge of climbing 56 mountain passes.

Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres can be reached from islands such as Barbados and Antigua. They are about a half-hours boat ride from Cancun which is a popular Mexican fishing village and usually full of tourists. So if you want to get away to a quieter spot this is for you. You can walk the entire island but people prefer to use rented golf carts. If you visit from mid-May to mid-September you’ll discover that the waters surrounding Isle Mujeres are full of hundreds of migrating whale sharks. Even though they are large at up to 50 feet long they’re not dangerous. When on land you can explore Mayan ruins which are dedicated to the fertility goddess Ixchtel.

Anegada in the British Virgin Islands

It was always at Anegada’s highest point at 28 feet that sailors from the 16th to the 19th centuries would realize that they were approaching land only to crash into the Caribbean’s third-largest continuous coral reef at Horseshoe Bay. Tourists can see these shipwrecks and they host some of the world’s best diving along with stingrays and 100 different species of tropical fish which make their home among the skeletons found in the Spanish galleons and British warships. If you don’t prefer to go so deep there is snorkeling to be done through mazes of tunnels. You can also stay on land and visit the pink colored and lovely Flamingoes at Flamingo Pond.

The beaches of Grand Cayman have many massive hotel chains. If you want to get away by yourself to place less crowded there are Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. Cayman Brac draws adventure-seeking hikers and rock climbers. There is the dramatic limestone bluff to explore. You’ll discover that craggy gray rocks run the length of the island and rise to a 140-foot sheer cliff at the eastern end of the island. Visitors can walk along the main footpath and explore the eerie, lunar landscapes until they reach the lighthouse right at the tip. If you wish you can arrange for free, custom designed, guided nature and culture tours.

Isla Bastimentos

There is an amazing dense rain forest in the interior of Panama’s Bocas del Toro and this is surrounded by white sand beaches and mangrove inlets. This beauty is located around 35 miles from Costa Rica. Here you will find year-round temperatures of about 82° F. This is a popular spot with professional surfers who come to this archipelago to catch some of the hemisphere’s best breaks at Wizard and Third Beaches. In the prime season which is from December to March, you’ll discover that the waves in the warm, blue-green water can swell up to 12 feet in height.

Philly Cheesesteak originated in the U.S.A. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is a sandwich made from thinly sliced pieces of steak and melted cheese on a long roll. Cheesesteaks are one of Philadelphia’s favorite foods, along with hoagies, water ice, and soft pretzels.

Credited with inventing the cheesesteak are Philadelphians Pat and Harry Olivieri by serving chopped-up steak on hoagie rolls in the early 1930s. They began selling it at their hot dog stand near south Philadelphia’s Italian Market. Once they caught on Pat opened his own cheesesteak restaurant in 1930 and it still operates today as Pat’s King of Steaks. As time passed there was a demand for change and cheese was added. Cheez Whiz was first marketed in 1953.

The steak is typically top round, although other types such as rib eye are often used. One way of preparing the cheesesteak is to cut the steak very thin so that it is almost translucent. Then it is placed on a lightly oiled griddle at medium temperature. The slices are quickly browned and then scrambled into smaller pieces with a flat spatula. To prevent the steak from getting overdone it is often placed on top of lightly fried onions. At times thicker slices of steak are used such as chunks of frozen thin slices which are defrosted as they are cooked. There are some vendors who omit the chopping, serving their sandwiches with the slices of steak in the whole form.

Cheese can be added at the last stage of griddling, placed on the bread before the meat is added or ladled on top of the sandwich as the last step. When adding cheese while griddling the steak is shaped on the griddle so that the roll could cover it then the cheese is laid on top and allowed to melt for a minute and then the roll is placed over the steak and with a spatula, the entire contents are scooped onto the roll.

Another method is that the cheese is placed along the inner sides of the sliced roll and either melted beforehand or melted by the heat of the freshly cooked steak. The sandwich is served in a long roll, typically a 6 or 12 inch (15 or 30 cm) loaf of Italian bread. The bread is sliced lengthwise to form a cradle, similar to what is done to a hot dog bun. A cheesesteak may include other optional ingredients like fried onions, sautéed green peppers, and mushrooms. There are some menus that include mayonnaise, hot sauce, ketchup or pizza sauce.

The cheeses most frequently used are white American, provolone, and Cheez Whiz. A few locations may offer Swiss, cheddar or mozzarella. Since Cheez Whiz was first marketed in 1952 it soon became the topping of choice because of the ease with which it spreads. Some places pre-melt the cheese to achieve a Cheez Whiz-like consistency but some just put freshly cut slices over the meat letting the heat of the sandwich melt it. There is also mild provolone.

Variations of the cheesesteak are a steak sandwich topped with pizza sauce and sliced or crumbled mozzarella and is known as a pizza steak. It’s melted under a broiler to brown the cheese. Some places offer sliced pepperoni as an additional topping to make it a pepperoni pizza steak. A cheesesteak made with chicken is called a chicken cheesesteak which can be served with honey mustard. When served with buffalo wing sauce and bleu cheese dressing it’s known as a buffalo chicken cheesesteak.

Another plus for resveratrol is that it may keep your memory sharp as it helps to keep beta-amyloid protein from forming which is a key ingredient in the kind of plaque that is found on the brains of people who have Alzheimer’s. So enjoy that mellow glass of red wine.

Antioxidants which are found in red wine might just be able to keep you healthy. It was discovered during research that people who drank more than 14 glasses of wine weekly for a year were at least 40% less likely to get the common cold. Antioxidants are also known to fight infections and to help in the fight against the effects of free radicals which can play a role in cancer and other diseases. It is possible that they may also lower the levels of sex hormones to help protect against breast cancer. Researchers have discovered that drinking at least one glass of red wine three or four times a week can help to starve any nascent cancer cells.

So enjoy the occasional glass of red wine and don’t forget that you can also use it in your cooking.

A lot of people who have gardens grow vegetable such as tomatoes and cucumbers in greenhouses. This is so that the plants are protected from the elements and safe from dying if temperatures take drastic changes. People who don’t use greenhouses usually don’t know how they work and therefore don’t consider them as necessary choosing to grow their vegetables out in the open.

Greenhouses have been designed to let sunlight filter through the top and the walls. What happens when the sun shines upon a greenhouse is the solar ray energy gets converted into heat as they pass through the glass or plastic depending on what material the greenhouse is made of. Once the air heats up in the greenhouse a tropical-like atmosphere results which helps plants to grow. Plants just grow better if they are protected from the elements and get a plentiful water supply.

A greenhouse can be made of plastic or glass and it is meant to be able to trap and keep as much light and heat as possible in it. The plants and the soil inside absorb all the sunlight that filters in and then reflects it back out. When redirected solar energy changes. The shortwave infrared radiation from sunlight passes into the greenhouse and in turn, these waves turn into longer-wave infrared radiation which is then absorbed by all of the plants and can’t pass out of the greenhouse again.

As the day progresses and more sunlight filters in, more energy gets trapped and the heat in the greenhouse expands. As a result of which all of the plants, soil, and circulation become warm and moist. This process in known as convection and it simply means that the plants heat up, moisture is released, and this moisture produces the humidity that is found inside of the greenhouse. Humidity is a kind of water vapor which is known as greenhouse gas.

If you choose to construct a greenhouse you need to pick a place in your garden where there is optimal sunlight all through the year. Keep in mind that the temperatures in your greenhouse will be warmer all the time than the actual temperatures outside. If however you want to grow plants in the wintertime too and you live in a freezing climate zone you will need to add some artificial heat to your greenhouse.

If temperatures outside warm up then be sure that your greenhouse doesn’t get too hot. There are two ways to get plenty of ventilation one is to open up all the doors in the greenhouse and the other is to spray the floor with water. Greenhouses can be of any size structures.
