Legend and reality, Dolls Island.

Don Julian created this nightmare with abandoned dolls so as not to enrage the ghost of a girl. Now this macabre place is a tourist attraction.

The legend of this place tells that a young girl drowned entangled among the lilies, since then her spirit remained in place.

The beauty of Xochimilco, is contrasted with the stories or legends that have emerged around the so-called "Island of dolls", a small place where its only inhabitant was Don Julian Santa Ana Barrera.
A man who came to live there since the 70s and who died at the age of 80, at the beginning of the 90s when the ecological rescue of Xochimilco was carried out, drew attention to the chinampa surrounded by dolls.

At first Don Julian did not want to talk about the dolls he had in his chinampa, but later he agreed to give his version of them. He commented that they were there to scare away evil spirits, and to make their harvests better; He said that the dolls appeared suddenly and that they accompanied him at night.

When Julian arrived on the island a young girl drowned on its shores, since then she heard voices, footsteps and lamentations from a woman so she decided to protect herself with dolls. Over time, different legends have emerged; It is said that a man who simulated sex with one of the dolls, died shortly after.

They also say that from time to time, the broken mechanisms work and the dolls cry, laugh, or call their mothers. Even one of them, La Moneca, Don Julián's favorite, is worshiped as a small deity. Tourists offer money and small gifts to intercede for them in difficult to solve problems or small requests.

Julián Santa Ana never stopped listening to the voices and whenever he went fishing with his nephew he told him about a mermaid who wanted to take him away. One afternoon, while fishing in front of the waters that took that young woman decades ago, Anastasio retired to see how the animals were. When he returned, his uncle was in the water. He had fallen there with heart failure. In the same place where he predicted that one day the siren would pick him up.
