RESISTANCE MONDAY!
Remember the call for action for Valbona from this years’ BRT2? You did a good job, but the destruction has continued since then and is the result is gut wrenching. While all eyes are celebrating the free flowing Vjosa and the victory there, politicians are getting away with destroying the paradise valley of the Valbona.
Many of you have acted upon our spring action but now this battle needs a real push. Local people have been fighting hard to stop the construction of hydropower plants along 30km of stunning river and they have succeeded so far in reducing the number of planned developments to “only” six. Two of these started construction last September and are already causing massive, irreversible damage.
Now it is a race to the finish to see whether the locals’ lawsuit can get through the courts before the plants finish construction. A handful of villagers and activists are up against one of the most powerful businessmen in Albania, and they need your help!
What can YOU do?
1. Share. Any help getting international media attention, or media attention to reach expat Albanian public will be invaluable. Tag Prime Minister Edi Rama. Let him know we are all watching.
2. Send an email to Zamir.Dedej@akzm.gov.al, the head of the National Agency of Protected Areas, telling him your concern. He has also spoken publically against the hydropower developments, but he needs evidence to support him. Cc the Ministry of Tourism and Environment: info@mjedisi.gov.al.
3. Send an e-mail to EU Environment commissioner at daniel.calleja-crespo@ec.europa.eu or the head of EU delegation in Albania: romana.vlahutin@eeas.europa.eu
