Surf, Style of Life
.
Surfing can seem, at first sight, a sport like any other, that is, a physical activity to have fun, improve our physical condition or dedicate ourselves to it professionally.
But the reality is that it goes beyond being a sport like any other. Surfing is a philosophy, a very special way of understanding life and nature.
All the ways of defining surfing are valid, and none of them faithfully represents what it is. There are very subjective connotations when defining it, but what is important is what it means for oneself.
Surfing is love of the sea, nature, freedom, well-being ... Its fundamental principle is the search for the "perfect wave", a search that can last a lifetime, but therein lies its essence, in the search constant of the "wave of your life" that, after all, resembles the eternal search for "happiness" so well known to all.
But not only is it not a sport because of its philosophy, nor is it because of its antiquity, since it is one of the oldest sports and that has evolved the most since its original practice. There are records in which it is found that surfing It was already 500 years ago on the islands of Polynesia and when in 1778, James Cook, in one of his expeditions, arrived in Hawaii, surfing was already practiced by the natives for some time. It was a common and highly developed activity. They called it "The Sport of the Gods," because at first only noble people could practice it, since it elevated them above ordinary men.
One of the most characteristic features of lovers of this sport, is its traveling spirit, motivated as I commented before, for that eternal search for the "perfect wave", which leads many to travel the world. And of this traveling spirit and adventurer, Surf Tourism is born.
This type of tourism is becoming increasingly larger and, therefore, has aroused the interest of many national and international destinations. It is a tourist market that is in continuous process of expansion and structuring: there are specialized operators, websites that offer the possibility of booking Surf Camps and Surfaris all over the world, surf blogs, surfer material stores, sports tourism fairs, etc. ... ..all a universe accessible to this type of potential tourist.
In our country, communities such as Euskadi, Galicia and Asturias, among others, have contributed to its development with important initiatives to promote and boost Surf Tourism.
In Gijón and Salinas, for example, there are surf schools that offer courses on their beaches. These schools have opted for social networks to make themselves known.
The search for the best waves, takes surfers to surf the best beaches in the world to surf. A place of worship and mecca of surfing, is the Island of Oahu (Hawaii), where beaches such as Waimea Bay, Pipeline or Sunset Beach, are the top of any ranking. The power to surf the waves of these temples of water, would be the dream and the illusion of any surfer.
Linked to surfing, there is a whole culture around, in travel, music, cinema, environment, dress ...
The "surfer style" is known worldwide. For some it is more a commercial movement, but what can not be denied is that their way of dressing differentiates them and identifies them at the same time. Brands like Billabong or Quicksilver, are clear examples of this style.
I would like to dedicate this post to all lovers of this sport, among which I include myself, because although I have never practiced it, I have always admired its way of understanding life, its close physical and mental relationship with the sea and nature, their rituals, their spirituality and that "great search" that motivates them and at the same time unites them forming a beautiful and great tribe, with a vision of life different from the conventional one.
