Hummingbird- the smallest bird in the world

.
Hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world. There are more than 300 hummingbird species in the world. With the beak and the tail together it is only six centimeters long. These small birds have a very fast metabolism. This means that most of the energy is spent by flying, so they eat almost all day. A hummingbird eats twice their body weight every day. Usually, they are fed with nectar and insects. Its long tongue has slots on the side that collect nectar from the flowers. In one second they can lick 10-15 times. A hummingbird must eat about half their weight of sugar per day.

Their legs are poorly developed because they are flying all day. The hummingbird's flight is incredible for watching. They can fly up, down, forward, back, even sideways, depending on the direction of flight and air conditions. They can also stay still in the air. A hummingbird flaps its wings up to between 50 and 200 times per second.

These birds are also special because they see and hear better than humans. They are also able to see ultraviolet light, and they have no sense of smell at all (or have it a very little)

Their bright, vibrant colors are the result of the overflow of light that falls on them, and they look like they are covered with rainbow colors. If they wish, they can hide their colorful feathers. Although they are very beautiful, they are not like other birds. They do not have their own singing voices but they try to imitate singing of other birds. They are named Hummingbirds because these amazing birds create a humming sound when they fly.

HazySue I love hummingbirds. Their little wings move so quickly that it looks like they are just hanging in the air. Terrific write up about them.
