If you notice that your French fries is shorter than usual, it means that French fries is your staple food and it's big of a deal. But the most important reason is, it's due to the shortage of potato harvest in Europe during the summer season.
The poor harvest can be attributed to the very hot summer season in many countries. The heatwave caused lack of rain which meant fewer potato harvest for farmers. With the shortage of supply, the prices of potatoes also increased but the average size of the potatoes decreased. Which means European people will be eating smaller chips.
Fries are the natural dish in Belgium and this shortage is a big talking point to them. In fact they love their fries too much that there is a campaign that French fries should be changed to Belgium fries!
