I did an article forever and a day ago talking about my continuing hunt for freelance work via the internet. That article seems to be really popular and in the time since then I've found some tentative success. I say 'tentative' because the reality is that I could lose this work very, very easily. Having only logged back into Tuetego after quite a while, I found a few articles about making money online which were very interesting but it did get me thinking: what other methods are there?

I've limited myself to 7 methods. Let's get into it.

Experience and Legitimacy

The biggest issue that a lot of people (myself included) have with job hunting in general is experience or rather a lack of experience. My own skill set is mostly based in the fields of Journalism and Creative Writing. I also have a 150 hour TESOL certificate so that's something. Unfortunately, however, the fact that I have the qualifications doesn't actually mean much as I have little to no experience. This makes finding work - just in general - much harder than it should be.

My epilepsy and autism (yes, I'm on the autism spectrum), make it harder for me in particular because I don't do well under extreme pressure and can't do several things at once. Working online takes away some of the pressure of a workplace environment by allowing you to work in the comfort of your own home. This is a good start but then the dreaded experience monster rears its ugly head. Looking for legitimate online teaching work is hard; most places require that you have at least a few years of classroom experience of some kind - at least from what I could find.

Which brings up the next thing: Legitimacy. For every legit online company/site, there are two or three illegitimate ones. The worst part is that it's not always easy to tell which places are genuine and which are the frauds. This fact has led me to be VERY careful what I sign up for - even when I do sign up, it's only after major research.

That doesn't mean that there isn't legitimate online work; in fact it's quite the opposite. There's plenty to do but you have to be careful - as I've already mentioned.

Variety

I think I'm going to do a few articles on making money online but for now let's just look at a few things that you can do with little to no experience.

1. Writing articles for websites. There are plenty of websites that allow you to write and content and get paid for it. Whether it's a company or your own personal blog; you can write articles and make some money out of it.

2. Photography. Yeah, apparently this is a thing; you take a photo and then sell it to a stock photo site (i.e. Shutterstock). Obviously it's a bit more complicated than that but that's the core idea.

3. Selling your own products/services. This is probably the hardest thing on this list. It requires a heck of a lot of marketing and promotion. Unlike a lot of the methods listed here, this is something I've got some minor experience with. I started promoting my services as an English Tutor and Editor on social media and with business cards and posters. I can't say it's really paid off, I've gotten some tuition work which is great but it's not going to last forever.

4. Videos on YouTube. This less reliable than some of the other stuff here but it is possible to make money doing videos on YouTube.

5. Product Testing & Affiliate Marketing. Essentially, a company will send you a product to test and promote. Payment methods here will vary so make sure to do your homework.

6. Microtasking. There are several sites that will list certain, small tasks that you can do and get paid for. I've done this myself and quickly lost interest as the pay is typically only a cent or two and that's AFTER you've provided proof and had the job approved. The advantage here, apart from the obvious one of staying at home, is that the work is pretty interesting and you can do several tasks in a day without an issue...as long as you have saint-like patience.

7. Transcription. This is something that I've just recently started doing so I can't say just yet how viable it is. What I can say is that it's very interesting. You listen to an audio clip and type what you hear. Sounds simple enough, right? Well...not really; the places that do transcription work are typically pretty strict so you have to be extremely careful about not missing anything in the audio. On the upside the pay is pretty decent.

Final Thoughts:

Online work seems to be the way forward in terms of business and the sheer variety of work means that there's something for everyone. The problems come from locating genuine places of employment amidst a sea of illegitimate places. I'll reiterate what I said earlier: DO YOUR RESEARCH!

I'm definitely going to do more of this line of content (online work) - documenting my thoughts and experiences as best I can. In the meantime, thanks for reading!

This is going to be a long one...

The Backstory: My First Job

Let's take a trip back to 2014, I had just finished my GED and SAT exams and was now on the hunt for a job - this was in January. I had a plastic envelope with 20 - 30 copies of my resume and went up to the local mall. The mall had been open for about 2 years at this point in time so it was still quite new but it was busy!

I handed out 10 or 15 copies of my resume before heading home and, for the next few months, I waited. Life continued, I attended my martial arts classes, played games, read books and so on. Then in early April of 2014, I got a phone call; it's around 06:30 in the morning so I'm a little groggy because it was early on a Wednesday and I was still asleep until the phone rang. The conversation went pretty much as follows:

Me (Groggy and half asleep): "Hello?"

Stranger: "Hello, is this Greg Seebregts speaking?"

Me: "Yes, can I help you?"

Stranger: "I'm calling to find out if you're available for an interview?"

Me: "Interview?"

Stranger: "Yes, you left your resume with us some time ago and we've had some openings; would you be able to come in?"

Me: "When?"

Stranger: "About eight o clock."

At this point, I'm fully awake so I go: "Sure, I'll be there."

Of course, I rush to shower and get dressed, downing a piping hot cup of coffee and grabbing a bag with more copies of my resume and some stationary. Got a lift to the mall (it was well within walking distance but my mom gave me a lift anyways) and went inside. The manager spots me with my bag and binder and I explain about the phone call; she leads me through the back of the store past the store room to the employees break room.

I sit down and am given a cup of coffee - which wasn't that good to be honest but I drank it anyways because...well...coffee. A good 20 minutes or so go by before someone comes in and I'm taken to the managers office - I sit there for a while answering a host of different questions - this was the primary interview. After that was done, I was led back to the break room and given a basic literacy test to complete before having to go and answer more questions.

After that was all out of the way, I spent the next few months following up until I was told to attend an orientation day. From there I waited about a month or so before I started working. I worked mostly on the shop floor as a shelf packer but I also worked as a checkout assistant and handled the parcel counter. As the year went on, our quiet little store got quieter and we'd show up to work with almost nothing to do. I stayed on until December of that year before leaving to focus on my studies. Looking back, this was probably not the smartest thing to do.

No Backup:

I had no backup plan in place, I got a job and I'd planned to stick it out as long as I could but with all the health problems I'd had (I was sick most of my first few months) and the lack of any meaningful work to do; one year was all I'd managed. Unfortunately I'd made a mistake and gotten comfortable; stopped looking for work as soon as I'd gotten the job. That mistake has been nipping at my heels ever since and it probably always will.

Throughout 2015 and 2016 I worked the flea market scene - mostly unsuccessfully - while I looked for a new job. I found nothing, the end of those two years came around; I worked a small week-long Christmas time flea market and that was it.

2017, saw me start tutoring English online via Skype chat and that lasted until mid-2018. I've been kinda stuck ever since then though, finding places that look promising but that ultimately go nowhere; this is obviously demoralizing. At the time of this writing, however, things may be looking up as I'm due to start tutoring again in September.

Only difference now is that I'm still hunting for good freelance backup plans.

I mentioned in my introductory piece that I'd published my first novel in August of 2016. Since the beginning of that particular project I've been getting particular questions about it. Now, I won't go into the whole project from start to finish in one article because that'd take forever to read but I will go into it in segments. With that in mind, let's start out with the origins of the project and take it from there.

My first novel was born primarily out of boredom; I'd just finished my final exams for Grade 10/11 (this was at the end of October 2012) and I was facing a 3 month vacation. At the time, I wasn't involved in any social activities and I had literally nothing to read (I had tons of books but nothing appealed). So, I sat thinking about the upcoming 3 month vacation period and wondering what I was going to do.

Now, I should mention that for one of my exams I had to write a composition piece - short story, argument or something else. I thought about that piece for a bit and started typing into Microsoft Word. I didn't know much about writing; had no clue what I was doing. All I knew was that I needed something to keep myself busy for a 3 month period or I'd go crazy. I drew inspiration from the Underworld and Resident Evil films as well as a few other post-apocalyptic genre films.

I threw in a couple of vampire characters - this was at the time that the Twilight craze was going strong and vampire literature was selling - and the rest is more or less history. The first draft was 70 pages in length and I sent it out to a few members of my family and a few friends got a lot of positive feedback on the story and characters but found that the writing was extremely clunky in places; so it was back to the drawing board...this was in early 2013. I spent the next 3 years working on the project; refining the writing making story changes - adding stuff in, taking stuff out etc. the finished product was about 300 pages and on the 31st of August, 2016, four years after I started the book; The Feral: Book 01: Apocalypse was published to Amazon Kindle.
