Who Are Heroes and How Are They Made?

.
Is anyone could be a hero?

It has been said that a hero is someone who puts others before himself or herself. He has good moral ethics. He does things for the sake of being good, and not just a means to an end, or a reward for good deeds. He does good for the sake of doing good.

Based on the above definition generally a hero is a person who who does something not for himself but for others without expecting something. Thus, we could be a hero then if we want to, couldn't we?

I am writing this in line with our National Heroes Day which is celebrsted today to honor the country's heroes. It is held on the last Monday of every August to mark the anniversary of the Cry of Pugad Lawin, the beginning of the Philippine Revolution by the Katipunan and its Supremo Andrés Bonifacio in 1896.

Before this was held on 30th of November to coincide with the birthday of Andres Bonifacio, founder of the Katipunan. But it was changed to the fourth Monday of August, so that those known or unknown men and women who sacrificed their lives for Philippine freedom would be given a tribute.

In our country we have known heroes like Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Applinario Mabini, Gregorio del Pilar. And the recent recognized hero is Nimoy Aquino. The infamous hero is Ferdinand E. Marcos whose heroism became a controversy.

What about yours? How do you honor your heroes in your country?

indexer In the UK we have a well-established honours system that makes awards twice a year - at new year and on the Queen's official birthday. There are various grades of honour, with awards going not only to people in the public eye (such as actors, politicians and sports people) but also people who have given important service to their local community over a matter of years.

Explorer2017 We're doing it here in our country too. However it is politically influenced. @indexer

indexer @Explorer2017 The UK system certainly has political influences, but that is not to say that people who are politically opposed to the government of the day cannot be honoured - they often are.
