The official communiqué has defended that Catalonia is part of Spain
As it has just been announced, the United States Department of State has just positioned itself on the recent declaration of Catalan independence that took place today, 27 October, during an extraordinary plenary session of the Catalan Parliament. In his statement, the government of Donald Trump is strongly in favor of Spain, arguing that Catalonia is only part of its territory. The communiqué read as follows: "The United States defend the unity of Spain; the United States is pleased to have a great relationship and a sense of fellowship with our alliance with NATO, ally of Spain. Our two countries have cooperated very closely to advance and share our security and economic priorities. Catalonia is an integral part of Spain, and the United States supports the constitutional government of Spain and the measures it must take to keep Spain strong and united ». On the other hand, the government of Mariano Rajoy, plans to take measures as detailed in the last resolutions throughout this afternoon, at which point Article 155 will enter into force in its entirety and Catalan autonomy will be abolished, starting with the cessation of its leaders and the taking of control of the governmental institutions.
Donald Trusk, the president of the European Council, has warned on Friday that "nothing changes" for the European Union and that Spain remains the "only interlocutor" for the community bloc, shortly after Parliament declared the Independent Republic of Catalonia. "I hope the Spanish Government favors the force of arguments, not the argument of force," he added in his brief statement. The European Commission has, for the time being, opted not to make formal statements on the latest developments in Catalonia, and reiterates its position on the rule of law and the Spanish Constitution. "We have recalled the need to respect the Constitution, which says that the referendum of 1 October last is illegal," said sources of the Community executive. The president of the institution, Jean-Claude Juncker, travels in French Guiana, will appear at around 20.00 hours, Spanish time, and if you want to comment on Catalonia, it will do so there, according to the sources added.
Puigdemont was quick to reply to the European leader by saying: "Catalans always favor the strength of arguments". Just moments before, Puigdemont addressed the Catalan citizens in a speech in the Parliament where he asserted with "words that leave the heart, the emotion and also of the reason" that today has become a step "long awaited and long fought" . In addition, he has asked the Catalan citizens to continue fighting these days and has announced: "There are times when we will all have to keep the pulse of our country".
