Virxe da Rocha
.
Baiona was always a strategic point defended by Monteferro, the Cies Islands and Monte Boi itself, where the Monterreal Castle is located. In order to protect the navigators and guide them as a lighthouse, in 1912 the figure of a giant granite virgin was built in a viewpoint on the rise of Monte Groba or Gabiñeira. His architect was none other than the Galician Antonio Palacios, author of many works as the Votivo Temple of Nigrán.
Her figure merges with the rocks on which it is placed and in her arm a boat is held which can be accessed through a stairway inside the sculpture. Of note is the cross that is located on the head that reminds us of the tops of the towers of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
From the top we will admire the Bay of Baiona, Monteferro and the Cies Islands.
At the foot of the monument a recreational area was installed to enjoy the pilgrimage of exaltation to the sardine that is held there.
