Aokigahara was formed from lava flows of the constant eruptions of Mount Fuji occurred between 800 and 1083, being the Jōgan eruption, occurred in 864, which contributed most to its formation, lasting 10 days and covering part of the bay of Edo and the province of Kai.

In addition, in 1993 The Complete Manual of Suicide, by Wataru Tsurumi, was published, a guide to commit suicide where he recommends this forest as an ideal place to take his own life.
