Aokihabara history. FUJI, JAPAN

Aokigahara was formed from lava flows of the constant eruptions of Mount Fuji occurred between 800 and 1083, being the Jōgan eruption, occurred in 864, which contributed most to its formation, lasting 10 days and covering part of the bay of Edo and the province of Kai.
The amount of lava emerged affected an old lake nearby called Senoumi (せ の 海), dividing it into 3 lakes; Sai (西湖 Sai-ko) Shōji (精進 湖 Shōji-ko) and Motosu (本 栖 湖 Motosu-ko).

In nineteenth-century feudal Japan, when famines and epidemics hit the population, the poorest families abandoned children and the elderly who could not feed (see ubasute).
For this reason, stories emerged that claimed that the forest was enchanted by the ghosts of those who died there.
Its fame as a place of suicide may be due to the fact that in 1960 the novel Nami no Tou, by Seicho Matsumoto, was published, in which at the end of the work two lovers commit suicide in the forest.
In addition, in 1993 The Complete Manual of Suicide, by Wataru Tsurumi, was published, a guide to commit suicide where he recommends this forest as an ideal place to take his own life.
