Can cats be trained like dogs?
.
Having been a cat owner the answer to the above question is yes most definitely. It has always been the tradition in the UK to let your cat out so it can go roaming and come back at meal times although many cats don't always stick to this.
For example, cats have been shown to go to multiple homes to get food when roaming and cats especially males are very territorial. To train a cat takes patience and time and that maybe why many people cannot be bothered. Cats, unlike dogs, please themselves whether they engage with you or not where as dogs come because they want to please you looking on the human family as their pack.
A cat, if you have the patience and time, can be trained to use a litter tray and even walk on a lead and yes obey commands. Thus you have the archetypal house cat where in the USA many cats are trained house cats and in some areas of the UK, this idea is catching on.
For example, I have seen a lady walking both her dog and cat on leads and while this may seem bizarre to some I see nothing wrong with it. Many people are also turning to the notion of a house cat because of the steady increase in traffic where countless cats become victims of accidents resulting in injuries and unfortunately in some cases death.
When it comes to cats and their claws make sure they are trimmed back and use a vet or a groomer if you are afraid to do it. Make sure also you have something the cat can wear its claws down like a scratch post.
Cats may seem to be cold hearted creatures compared to dogs but speaking as a person who has owned both this is not the truth. Cats can show as much love as dogs and yes it maybe on their terms but never the less they can interact and show a lot of affection.
Finally, dogs and cats can get on if brought up together and can even grow to love each other and even engage in play as my cat and dog did.
Both my cat and dog brought me hours of pleasure when I lived on my own and I will never forget them.

Flutterbydee › Nice article! My cat is 17 and can definately still learn new behaviour. Thank you for sharing :)
NyishaHv › Awesome article. I love reading articles about cats. And this one approached the topic of cats from an interesting perspective. I have known my cat to be attentive, to run to me when I call him or even to run after me when I'm running. Cats are very intelligent creatures. With practice and reinforcement cats can learn new things every day.
