Poor Kpop artists

.
Listening to Kpop (Korean pop) for almost two years, not all the time, I've learned to spot patterns which are present in the last years or even decades. Eastern cultures are famous for their combat to stay young forever; many times, overacting it. Still, it's their trade mark and it applies to this industry as well. There are some expressions which are typical for Kpop (both female and male groups).

First one will be "aegyo"(Kor. baby). When you want someone to do or perform aegyo, this person should act, literally, like a child. Being dressed extra cute, talk like that, mimicking children's voice and have children's gestures. In order to draw attention to themselves, especially when you a recently debuted group (which can take a while), many artists/idols are prepared to take this road.

There 's always a greater cause and this is the ultimate one; pleasing your fans or performing "fan service". Ok, aegyo can be fan service too but, fans can go over the board and start asking some unpleasant things. Now I see that idols actually idolize their fans and not the other way round. So, after fan service, we get "skinship", which is also a part of fan service, in my opinion. Touching your group members on their knees, ears, kissing them in the cheek without a specific reason overall, creating a sexual connotation. That must be a fan service and, let me tell you, that's not right. I once read somewhere that some Jpop (Japanese pop) groups even have their offices on a daily or weekly basis and fans can visit them, touch them (their face, hands), take a picture, talk to them. It's a nice gesture yet it all comes back to this, being available to your fans, becoming their toy.

Therefore, living only for your fans, you can't date; many agencies in Kpop ban their artists from dating. I remember that one of Super Junior members (one of the first Kpop groups) got married without telling his fans. You know what happened? Fans made a petition to kick him out of the group and, I'm not sure if they still count him as a member but, he is no longer present in a public eye. He vanished, as he never existed. If you want to be a Kpop artist, you need to make sacrifices and be an angel-like model to your fans (no drinking or acting wild, arrogant, cocky). Being humble is not a bad thing just, being obedient, losing yourself and your identity along the way well, that's when we have a problem. On a bright side, one day, there could be some changes.

frenchqueen Aegyo literally means baby, from the word aege. They try act cute acting like one. Cute is translated in Korean as kyupta (not sure of the spelling). I speak a little Korean as I have taught Koreans for 10 years now.
