Curonian Spit - World Heritage Site
.
I want to tell you about some most famous places of my country - Lithuania. Maybe one day you will visit us. First of all, it is the Curonian Spit that is included in the World Heritage list. It's a national park very famous for tourists from all over the world.
Curonian Spit is a peninsula with sand dunes, separating the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. The Curonian Spit was formed 3 thousand years ago before our era.
The north side of the spit belongs to the Republic of Lithuania. Another part belongs to the Kaliningrad Region of the Russian Federation. Along the spit, the only road on the peninsula has been built.
There are some old fishermen' villages under the sand. The weather was very rough there, with big winds that were moving the sand all the time and buried some villages. Now, there are only four settlements left that are all tourists attractions for its beautiful scenery, fresh air, white sandy beaches, and a nice Baltic sea.
Our dunes are the largest moving, drifting sand dunes in Europe. From one side they are washed by foaming Baltic sea, from another side they are washed by the Curonian lagoon. Both water sites are very close to each other. High sand dunes with both water sites form a very attractive site for tourists.
In 2000, the entire Curonian Spit was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural landscape. This recognition is the best estimate for cultural heritage, nature conservation, and infrastructure improvement activities in the Curonian Spit. Now the Curonian Spit is worth its value in the list of famous world national parks such as Iguassu, Kakadu, Kaziranga, Tongariro, and others.
