Mike Markkula joined Apple as an angel investor with a quarter of a million dollars. He organised the company and brough good contacts. Wozniak had already envisioned a new version of the Apple Computer. The Apple II is the product that helped Apple to really take off. It was basically an Apple I but with many improvements and for the first time a case, keyboard and power supply all integrated.
Steve Wozniak found a way to display colours in NTSC systems and the Apple II could display up to 16 colours. The new Apple logo reflected this feature (remember the first logo was the one designed by Ronald wayne.
Steve Jobs oversaw the design of the computer case. Already obsessed with the details he didn't want a noisy power supply. Rod Holt joined the team to design "Switched-mode power supply" compliant with Job's noise requirements without moving parts (fans). To Holt's credit, modern computers use power supplies developed from his design.
At the time computer were still a hobbyist item. It was with the arrival of VisiCalc that sales took off. VisiCalc was the precursor of software like Lotus123 or MS Excel.
Another important device arrived in 1978, the Disk II system designed by Wozniak. The Apple II initially was shipped with cassette readers and the new floppy disks would be a game changer in the industry.
The Apple II would be the first of a big family of computers that lived alongside other models like the Apple /// the Lisa or the Macintosh. It lived until 1993.
