The power of the monarchy was represented in the baroque architecture but not only in France, also in Europe.
The crown of Spain spread across mediterranean sea to Italy and the consequences were positive -only- for culture.
Charles III of Spain (VII of Naples) ruled in the south of Italy and decided to bring to the city the Farnese Collection (his son Ferdinand IV of Naples did), created an exchange among artists (in this period we can see italian and spanish artists working together) and decided to build, of course, a residence.
If we go to Naples, we can see the Royal Palace, but Charles III just modified it to live there.
We have to look for the city of Caserta where he decided to build his residence. Why? Because Charles III "desired a palace which would rival the Palace of Versailles".
Luigi Vanvitelli was a famous architect in italy who designed the Royal Palace of Caserta (His greatest work) and definitely he surpassed Versailles, with 120 ha of garden, which includes an "English Garden", 1200 rooms and 47,000 m2 each floor (five floors = 235,000 m2)*
Personally, the gardens are immense and beautiful. You can ride a bike, take a bus or go by feet. I recommend that you take a walk because you can take photos, relax and admire the fountains. The palace is cute, small but impressive.
