Велес

.
Veles - a city in Macedonia and a center of the same municipality. The city is located in the central part of Macedonia, more precisely on the banks of the river Vardar. Veles is the sixth city by number of inhabitants in Macedonia with a total population of 43,716 inhabitants. In the northwest of Veles is the capital of Macedonia, Skopje, the city of Sveti Nikole is in the northeast, the town of Shtip is on the east, Prilep is in the southwest and Kavadarci and Negotino are in the southeast. Veles has a very favorable geographical position because it is a crossroads on international road and rail routes and one of the major transit centers in Macedonia.

Veles throughout the history was called by different names, of which three are most used. From the very founding of the city, Veles was called the name of Vilazora. Later, the city was renamed the Kyungli name, which was later replaced by today's name. During the SR Macedonia, but also in the first years of the independence of the state, Veles was called by the name Titov Veles, in honor of the Marshal Josip Broz - Tito. Veles as a settlement existed since 168 BC. and it was somewhat more lively than today's location. Because the city has a strategic position, it has often been targeted by various foreign invasions and occupations and was part of different Balkan kingdoms and states, starting from Paionia and ending with the SFRY.

Veles is important and famous for a number of things. The city was home to many Macedonian revivers, revolutionaries, writers and poets, and it is one of the cradles of Macedonian culture, and through history it meets as the city of the first theater in Macedonia, the city where the first actress, teacher Tenka A. Kolarova in the popular melodrama "The Streets of Genoveva" in 1875, the city of the first library, the first high school, the first music school, and the first museum. The city is characterized by its typical Veles and Old Town architecture. Veles is one of the industrial centers of Macedonia and a significant trading, transport and economic center.
