FGM
.
What is FGM?
FGM stands for Female Genital Mutilation and is a form of practice that is practiced on girls between the ages of 0 -15
Over 140 Million girls and woman worldwide have had their genitals mutilated. There are three types of FGM,
The first type is:
Clitoridectomies - Which is the removal of the clitoris
The second type is:
Excision - Which is the removal of the clitoris and the labia minora, with or without excision of the labia majora (the labia are the ‘lips’ that surround the vagina).
The Third type is:
Infibulation = Which is the narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and sewing over the outer, labia, with or without removal of the clitoris or inner labia.
FBM is typically practiced because of;
-Tradition
-Perceived as religious (But no religion actually says you have to)
-Marriage Eligibility
-Mark of status
-Social Beliefs
-Believed to be ''Cleaner'' (This is untrue)
1370 Woman and girls in the UK and Wales are affected by FGM, the practice is usually done before puberty so the girl/woman can ''Become a woman.''
FGM is illegal in the UK and other countries but it still happens in the UK and other places. The most common places in the UK are
-Doncaster
-Bradford
-Manchester
-Coventry
-And more
FGM isn't performed by medical professionals and is typically done in their own home or in another country as it is illegal medical professional will NOT do the practice. As it is usually practiced by non-medication professionals there is no anesthesia for the patient so they are held down by members of the family while this is all being performed.
Parents or family members will tell the daughter they're going to take a long holiday to another country and throw them a ''Becoming a woman party'' This is so that the child doesn't know what is going to happen to them when they arrive at the place they're ''Being cut'' they don't know what's happening and they're more willing to go along with it all.
If you know of someone who has had the procedure done or is going to have it done it is a criminal offense to not tell the police or child services as it is a form of child abuse and is illegal. You can be put in jail for 14 years if you know and withhold information to the police. 3 million girls are at risk of FGM every year!
FGM is not currently being taught in schools or to the teachers in schools. I personally think the teachers should know so they can look for signs of someone going to have the practice or someone who has already had the practice so they can report it.
FGM Causes a number of long-term effects in a person life
-Urinary and vaginal infections that keep coming back
-Chronic Pain
-Infertility
-Hemorrhaging
-Cysts
-Difficult childbirth
-Unable to have sexual intercourse
-flashbacks
-depression
-self-harm
- bleeding to death (most common)
-Behaviour changes
