Sigbin, Folklore Creature Most Feared by Kids
.
Unforgettable Folklore Stories for Appreciation or Apprehension
Our country is rich with legendary stories. They form a part and parcel of our culture. Kids are happy to listen about these stories. When I was a kid, I was an avid follower of every story which my late mother is telling me especially during bedtime. That is before I go to sleep.
These folklore stories that keep on bother my mind are tigbalang, sigbin, aswang, tayhu, wakwak. They are classified as horror tales. There is no moral lesson appended to that stories. They have made us fearsome and we make ourselves too wary for we might encounter them during night time. So when evening falls, all of us kids are at home. We are intact in our own respective home for we are afraid to go out or stay late at night.
Among these gruesome creatures, we used to listen is the story of sigbin. Sigbin is described as a hornless goat which is similar to a small kangaroo. It has flapping ears, burning eyes, whip-like tail, and the ability to walk backward.
Another legendary stories which are appreciated for their moral lesson are Ibong Adarna, Doce Pares, Bernardo Carpio, Maria Makiling, among others
These stories are handed from one generation to another generation by the kids' parents or elders. But nowadays, these seem to be forgotten. They are overlapped or overshadowed by the foreign superheroes like Superman, Spiderman, Batman and Robin, Power Rangers, among others.
Do you have your own folklore stories to share too? We do look to know them.
