Martina Hingis' Birthday
She spent two years as World Number 1, winning 5 Grand Slams singles titles; Australian Open (1997, 1998, 1999), Wimbledon (1997), and US Open (1997). Her testings turned out positive for cocaine during 2007 Wimbledon and made her to retire earlier than expected. Just, this was her first, not last retirement.
O, yes, she has retired a couple of times. The last one was in 2017 and, seems final. Glad to hear, this year, she got married to her partner and she became a coach for the Swiss Fed Cup team. Hingis also played doubles; her pairing with Sania Mirza is/was my favourite.
Ignoring these numbers and titles, which are important, I know, to me, watching her on television was always a thrill. Being present in the 90s when tennis ruled the most (from Sampras, Graff, Davenport, some Croatian tennis players and many others), she was always so composed, focused and professional. I see a lot of her in Roger Federer in his starting days or is that of the fact they're both Swiss. She is truly a legend.
This is one of her quotes:
"Now that I beat Lindsay I feel so much better." :)
