Offering a satisfying peppery crunch with every bite, radishes have a unique place in the hearts of veggie lovers.
Radish is one of the nutritious root vegetables featured in both raw salads as well as in main recipes. This widely used root vegetable belongs to the family of Brassica. In Chinese culture, radish along with cabbage and soybean curd (tofu) believed as healthy and sustenance food items. A popular Chinese proverb goes like this, "eating pungent radish and drinking hot tea, let the starved doctors beg on their knees."
The vegetable is thought to have originated in the mainland China centuries ago, and today, it is one of the widely cultivated crops throughout the world. Botanical name: Raphanus sativus.
Radishes are a good source of vitamin C. Just 1/2 cup offers about 14 percent of your recommended daily allowance. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps battle free radicals in your body and helps prevent cell damage caused by aging, an unhealthy lifestyle, and environmental toxins. Vitamin C also plays a key role in collagen production, which supports healthy skin and blood vessels.
It's no surprise that radishes contain fiber, which keeps your system flushed and functioning with regularity and aids in maintaining a healthy weight.
Radishes are a natural diuretic, purifying the kidney and urinary systems and relieving inflammation.
Some other positive elements found in radishes include detoxifying agents that may potentially fight cancer, may help inhibit prostate, colon, breast, ovarian and possibly other cancers.
