Basil Growing Indoors

.
A lot of people love gardening and once the season ends they sometimes feel at a loss because the gardening season is over. However, you can take your gardening indoors and indoors it can become a very pleasant hobby. People who live in apartments very often choose to make small gardens indoors. A great way to start is by beginning with basil because not only does it look like a very nice plant, it is also an herb which can be used in cooking, and it smells delightful.

Basil is used a lot in Italian cooking, tomato sauces, and salads. You can even chop it up and use it for soups. If you grow your basil the right way and take good care of it the plant will grow for a very long time.

Growing basil indoors
• Good quality potting soil and 4-inch pots for planting. Pots have to have good drainage holes and saucers to be able to take up excess water.
• Place soil in a pot and scatter three or four seeds on top of the soil. Afterward, cover them up with about a ¼ inch of soil and water them with a spray bottle of water so that the seeds don’t wash away.
• Cover the pots with plastic wrap and secure the plastic wrap with a rubber band. This keeps heat and moisture inside and makes germination easier. Put the pots in a place where they will get indirect sunlight.
• Make sure you water the pots two or three times during the week always using a spray bottle and when the plants break through the soil remove the plastic wrap.
• When your basil plants have at least two sets of leaves thin out the seedlings. Pinch the weakest seedling and pull it gently out of the soil not disturbing the other plants. If you continue to do this once a week only the strongest plants will remain in the pot.
• Continue watering your basil plants with a spray bottle once or twice during the week to keep the soil moist. If there is very dry air around you might have to water them more often. Never let the soil dry out. Pinch off the tops of the plants as you use them and they’ll produce more. So that the leaves will be more favorable you have to remove any flowers as soon as they start to bloom.
• Feed your basil with a balanced liquid vegetable fertilizer about three to four times a year. Just follow the instructions on the package.

You will enjoy your basil plant as you flavor your food with it and your room will have a pleasant and wonderful aroma. Giving your plants the proper care will ensure them long growth and you’ll discover what a pleasant and relaxing hobby this can be.
