Once upon a time, there was a stork ...

.
A beauty of long beak and have its home on six continents. It's no other than stork. There are 19 stork species, and white stork (Ciconia ciconia) and black stork (Ciconia negra) have their nests in Croatia and can be found near rivers Drava, Dunav and Sava.

With these birds, everything is big; neck, beak, legs and they can fly although, they are bad flyers. They are very flexible concerning their habitat; either near water or far away from it. Most storks have their nets on trees but, 70% of Croatian storks, white storks in particular, have their nests on chimneys and buildings' roofs.

Croatian storks belong to eastern population and they fly to Africa, through Bospor and Dardaneli, and over Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey. Their flight approximately lasts between 8 - 15 weeks, from 6000 - 10 000 kilometers or 150 - 300 kilometers in a day. Bad climate and not enough food make storks to migrate.

Storks are meat eaters and like to eat fish, snakes, small rodents, amphibians, bugs, frogs. They occasionally eat plants; in fact, practically everything that seems tasty to them. Their food supply on a daily basis should be 400 - 500 grams. When they attack, they simply walk, stop, stiff their neck and grab a prey with their beak. In rare occasions, stork stalks or runs, actually flies after her prey.

White stork, the most usual one, can build a nest which weights between 500 kilos or two tones. Both parents are taking care of their little storks. They live for about 30 years. One meter high, to 4,4 kilos heavy, with wings to 165 centimeters. Feathers are dirty white coloured, with black back and black front feathers, along with red legs and bloody red feet. White stork is a specific kind because it can't sing, it makes a sound when upper beak kicks a down one or rattling. It's also a part of courting. Its sister by same genus, a black stork, has dark feathers of dark green and purple shining. The same height as the white but it's to 3 kilos heavy, lighter than its sister. It likes to spend its time in forests near Dunav and likes to stay away from humans, unlike the white one.

Percentage of white storks is drastically dropping down. Changes in their habitats, swamps that are drying off, different regulations of water, humans using more and chemicals and pesticides, house rebuildment where storks have their nests and other examples. In Croatia, storks are permanently protected species and you can't kill them, destroy their eggs or nests, disturb them and molest them. If you do, prices are really high to pay. In 1994, a small village in Sisačko-moslavačka county, Čigoć, thanks to Euronatur fund is declared as a first European village of (white) storks. Pretty nice, right?
