PAPUK, Croatian nature park

.
A "tiny" country as Croatia is, according to an article that was written by a German journalist during the FIFA World Cup 2018, it still has 8 national and 10 nature parks; a lower category than previous one. They are, written in Croatian alphabet (just move dijacritic signs, please): Kopački rit, Medvednica, Velebit, Biokovo, Telašćica, Lonjsko polje, Žumberak, Učka, Vransko jezero in Biograd and, of course, Papuk.

Since I live close to this last nature park, I shall try introducing you to this theme. Park Papuk, in short, is also a geopark ("knighted" in 2007), sharing its name with a mountain Papuk and partly belongs to Požeško-slavonska county, and other part belongs to Virovitičko- podravska county. There are 21 counties in Croatia, and this one is placed on the east, right in the middle of region called Slavonia. Papuk's quarters are in Voćin, placed in Virovitička-podravska county.

Why is Papuk called geopark? There are many remains of old sedimentary, even volcanic rocks basically, left-overs of the Pannonian, after the Ice Age, sea. Being the youngest of all natural parks, in 1999 it became a protected area, approved by the UNESCO.

There are three main areas of protection in this park and they are a forest-park Jankovac; a tourist attraction, a geological monument Rupnica; this is where are volcanic rocks found and Sekulinačke mountains; a place of untouched nature.

Having a hundred of streams; heights between 800 and 1000 meters high, 95% of the park are, of course, forests (of many trees); dominantly beech, oak kitnjak; a representative oak for this region, fir, horn beam. This is is not so surprising cause, 47% of Croatia is covered in forests. Back to park Papuk.

There are a lot of botanical self-grow grass plants; lilies, holly and other, 75 bird species and, unfortunately, 70% of animals are dominantly bugs. Although, a lovely Alcon blue butterfly resides here as well.

There were more animals than today; bears, wolves, even lynx. However, now and then, we can caught a glimpse of doe, dear, wild pig, fox and if we go deeper and higher, bats. If you live next to the park, finding snakes in your garden became a normal sight to see.

Inside park Papuk, there are fortress ruins, dated from Ottoman times. The most famous is Ružica (Cro. small rose) town near city Orahovica.

If you find yourself near by, come and visit park Papuk :)
